Italian snacks: A guide to my favourite savoury bites from Italy

Pasta and pizza are perhaps the first things that come to mind when people think of Italian cuisine. But beyond these classics, there is a universe of Italian snacks and everyday morsels that are simple and full of flavor, and that echo the country’s regional diversity, artisanal heritage, and reverence for good ingredients. Savory snacks: The bold and spicy side of snacking

Though sweet is the attention thief of the snack world, savory provides a wealth of rich and satisfying options from various cultures, cuisines, and cravings. With crunchy chips and cheese bites and spicy nuts and dainty slivers of meat, savory snacks are for the kind of people who cut the roof of their mouths on potato chips and like it that way. What makes a snack savory? Savory snacks have salty, spicy, and or umami taste profiles, which are a result of non-sugar-based ingredients used in the product, such as (flour, grains, starches, cheese, vegetables, meat, etc. Unlike sweet snacks, they activate a different part of the palate, providing a satisfying depth and complexity.
